1500 Job Cuts in Maryland

Superfresh markets aren’t doing so hot these days—especially in the Maryland area, where 22 stores will be closing soon. A federal bankruptcy court awarded Superfresh permission to sell the stores, and the company is doing just that—resulting in nearly 1,500 job losses.

The stores have not been closed yet, but are being auctioned off soon—and if they are purchased by willing buyers, the employees could find employment with whichever businesses end up buying the stores. Keep your fingers crossed for the employees of Superfresh; hopefully they will all find jobs, either with the new buyers or elsewhere, soon.

The recent announcement that a panel has okayed the development of an intelligence campus in Bethesda is a good thing, many believe. It could add 3000 jobs to the payroll and therefore improve those lacking positions right now. The National Capital Planning Commission approved the master plan and that means things are moving forward. The facility will be located where the former National Geospatial Intelligence Agency headquarters were prior to the agency moving to Fort Belvoir located in Virginia. The new federal intelligence community will provide an outstanding source of higher paying jobs. The building phase will include the addition of a secured garage that will hold 1825 spaces, a drop from the originally proposed option of 2200 spaces. The cut was due to the goal of improving forest preservation and views.

The Downtown Towson region is one of the hardest hit areas of the city. The economic conditions there have hurt businesses and residents alike. The addition of a multimillion-dollar development, though, could make a bit difference for the region. Can adding this position help to boost Baltimore jobs and provide an opportunity for individuals to land in a better place? The project is being called the Towson Circle III. The goal is to revitalize the sluggish economy present here. Many of the largest stores and entertainment venues here closed down in the last years.
